How do you choose your snowboard and ski helmet?
Ski and snowboard helmets are more than an element of comfort and style while descending a slope; they can prevent head injuries and even save your life. That is obvious; you do not need to be a genius to realise it! Ski and snowboard helmets are often classified by season according to their features. Ski and snowboard helmets are designed for cold weather, keep your head warm and comfortable, work with
ski and snowboard goggles and are certified to protect you. There are also several multi-sport certified helmets with features such as removable liners, so you can easily switch from winter to summer. The following guide will help you size and choose the right helmet for you.
1. Measure your head
Take a soft measuring tape and wrap it around your head approximately 1 cm above your eyebrows and ears. Most ski and snowboard helmets are measured in centimetres, so if you do not like calculations, measure your head in centimetres. For example, if you measure your head circumference and it is 56 cm, you will wear a 56 cm or Medium (55-58 cm) helmet, depending on the helmet’s sizing scale.
Do not have a measuring tape? Take a piece of string, wrap it around your head and then measure the string.
2. Try on the helmet
Once you receive your ski and snowboard helmet, put it on your head. The helmet should feel comfortable. A correctly fitting helmet should feel snug around your head from the start so that it does not move around. You do not want excessive space between the helmet and your head. Pay attention to any pressure or painful points.
3. Shake test
With the helmet on your head, shake your head in every direction. If the helmet moves on its own or shakes separately from your head, it is too large. Use your hand to move the helmet left and right, up and down. Your scalp should move with the helmet without the helmet changing position on its own. You can choose to fasten the helmet at this point if you wish, but this will not affect its actual fit; it will only keep the helmet on your head.
4. Final test
Is the helmet too tight? If your head feels squeezed or it does not fit on your head, the helmet is too tight. You should be able to wear the helmet comfortably all day.
