Ski and snowboard goggles must be chosen correctly when you head into the mountains to avoid the risk of snow blindness. Compared with sunglasses, ski and snowboard goggles offer maximum protection against the elements, and choosing the right pair means combining comfort and style with practicality.
The first thing to consider is size. Women’s ski and snowboard goggles are usually smaller than men’s, and within each category there is a wide variety of shapes. It is important to select a pair that fits your face shape - if you have a larger head, avoid compact styles that could be uncomfortable and limit peripheral vision.
Nowadays, almost all pairs of ski and snowboard goggles come with a double lens, which reduces fogging. If you are shopping on a minimal budget, however, double-check, as single lenses are much less effective.
An important element is compatibility between the ski and snowboard helmet and the chosen goggles.
There are two fundamental lens types to choose from: spherical and cylindrical.
Cylindrical lenses curve horizontally around the frame but are flat from top to bottom. They are simpler to manufacture and therefore cheaper, but still offer good performance and are arguably more stylish.
Spherical lenses are slightly taller, curving both horizontally and vertically like a balloon. This has three advantages: increased peripheral visibility, reduced glare and less distortion at the edges of the lens. Spherical lenses are therefore more expensive, but it is always worth checking whether the style and fit suit you.
