1. What are cookies?

An “internet cookie” (also known as a “browser cookie” or “HTTP cookie”, or simply a “cookie”) is a small file consisting of letters and numbers which will be stored on a user’s computer, mobile device or other equipment used to access the internet.

Cookies are installed through a request issued by a web server to a browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome).

Once installed, cookies have a defined lifespan and remain “passive”, meaning they do not contain software programs, viruses or spyware and will not access information on the hard drive of the user on whose equipment they have been installed.

A cookie consists of two parts: the name of the cookie and its content / value.

Technically, only the web server that sent the cookie can access it again when a user returns to the website associated with that web server.
